Of Monsters and Oceans

There have been far too many moments, lately, when the world has seemed like it's filled with monsters, but the reality is different.

The world is not filled with monsters, hiding underneath every cobblestone and lurking in the shadows. They're not in our closets, and underneath our beds, waiting for the right moment.. to strike.

No- the monsters are out in the open, in the daylight, showering in the sun, spreading hate and injustice in the name of love and acceptance.

It's the good ones that hide, within every home, every office space, and every system. Those same monsters call us radicals and misfits because we challenge the status-quo and find the depth they so desperately need.

It's as if the viewer is looking out from inside of a crested wave.  The ocean lies at the bottom of the picture, rises into a wave on the left, and crests on the top and to the right.  Through the oval view looking past the wave, we see the sky and the silhouette of some mountains.  The artist signature, Lina Abojaradeh, lies to the bottom left, where the wave begins and ends.

The truth is, though, that the world is far more compliacted, and has far more individuals that are neither good nor bad. They are the oceans compared to the rivers and lakes. On stormy nights, they challenge the status quo. On other days, they move along with the tides, rising and sinking without a care in the world, as if the polluted rivers are not dumping millions of tons of micro-plastics into them.

But the world has so much good. It's hidden behind mountain ranges and skyscrapers, but it's there. We just need to call it out, make it sustainable for it to come out of hiding. We need to stand against injustice in rooms filled with it. We are no better by calling things out, but we create a better culture. A culture that will call us out when we say or do the wrong things. The world is not filled with people that are too sensitive these days, the world is filled with people that are tired of swimming in pollution and breathing air that burns our lungs. We are not sensitive because we're living in a world that was not designed for most of us, we are sensitive to a fake world. A world built of corrupt systems that have taught us that WE have no place in them, that this world is not ours. But this world is ours, for it can not function without the lakes and oceans and even the rivers. We are all connected, we all have a voice, and we can all be heard. we just need to be first. The first to call out sexism, racism, homophobia and any other ism or form of oppression. We have to model the greatness of the world we deserve and see behind every broken patch in this fake one.

Will you be one of the first?
